Fruiting myxobacteria from the South Carolina coast.

چکیده

The widespread distribution of fruiting myxobacteria in the soil is fairly well known; however, there have never been reports on these bacteria isolated from the sand of an ocean beach. To establish the presence of myxobacteria in this possible habitat, samples of sand from the high tide marks of four South Carolina beaches were collected (see Table 1). One of the samples, 11, differed from the other 13 in that it consisted of woody, plant debris that had been washed ashore during a high tide. A sterile tongue depressor was used as a spatula to collect the sand from the top 3 to 4 mm of the high tide mark and to place it in a sterile WhirlPak bag (Nasco, Inc., Ft. Atkinson, Wis.). No special precaution, such as low-temperature stor-

Complete genome sequence of the fruiting myxobacterium Corallococcus coralloides DSM 2259.

Corallococcus coralloides, like most other myxobacteria, undergoes a developmental program culminating in the formation of fruiting bodies. C. coralloides fruiting bodies are morphologically distinct from those of other fruiting myxobacteria for which full-length genome sequences are available. The genome sequence of the 10.0-Mb C. coralloides genome is presented herein.

On Modeling Complex Collective Behavior in Myxobacteria

This paper reviews recent progress in modeling collective behaviors in myxobacteria using lattice gas cellular automata approach (LGCA). Myxobacteria are social bacteria that swarm, glide on surfaces and feed cooperatively. When starved, tens of thousands of cells change their movement pattern from outward spreading to inward concentration; they form aggregates that become fruiting bodies. Cell...

Waves and aggregation patterns in myxobacteria.

Under starvation conditions, a population of myxobacteria aggregates to build a fruiting body whose shape is species-specific and within which the cells sporulate. Early in this process, cells often pass through a "ripple phase" characterized by traveling linear, concentric, and spiral waves. These waves are different from the waves observed during slime mold aggregation that depend on diffusib...

Dynamic-energy-budget-driven fruiting-body formation in myxobacteria.

We develop an interacting particle model to simulate the life cycle of myxobacteria, which consists of two main stages--the swarming stage and the development (fruiting body formation) stage. As experiments have shown that the phase transition from swarming to development stage is triggered by starvation, we incorporate into the simulation a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) call...

Lingering Puzzles about Myxobacteria

T he myxobacteria are social and capable of constructing intricate macroscopic structures called fruiting bodies. First recognized as bacteria in 1892 by the cryptogamic botanist Roland Thaxter, these exotic anomalies have proved challenging to microbiologists. Even so, we now know a great deal about the nutrition, life cycle, growth physiology, intermediary metabolism, structural chemistry, ge...
